Drnevich Dissertation - Chapter 3. Ordinary and Dynamic Capabilities: Implications for Firm Performance and Competitive Heterogeneity

چکیده
A common issue in strategic management research involves sources of interfirm performance differences. Research on this issue assumes such competitive heterogeneity is attributable to variation in firm level factors of resources and capabilities, but this is difficult to establish empirically. This study begins to address this gap by examining the roles of Information Technology (IT) based capabilities in firm performance. Specifically, we examine whether differences in the heterogeneity of “zero-order” ordinary capabilities and “first-order” dynamic capabilities contribute to differences in firm performance. Results offer empirical support that both types of capabilities, as well as their heterogeneity, can influence performance, but that these effects vary. These observations offer potential implications for research on RBV, dynamic RBV, Dynamic Capabilities, and Competitive Heterogeneity. Working Draft: March 21, 2006

Information Technology and Business-Level Strategy: Toward an Integrated Theoretical Perspective
Information technology matters to business success because it directly affects the mechanisms through which they create and capture value to earn a profit: IT is thus integral to a firm’s business-level strategy. Much of the extant research on the IT/strategy relationship, however, inaccurately frames IT as only a functionallevel strategy. This widespread under-appreciation of the business-leve...
متن کاملIT-Enabled Competitive Advantage: The Strategic Role of IT on Dynamic Capabilities in Collaborative Product Development Partnerships Dissertation Summary
This study describes how IT can be strategically used as a source of differential performance outcomes in rapidly changing environments. Drawing from the dynamic capabilities view (Teece, Pisano, and Shuen 1997), a sustainable competitive advantage results from the ability to continuously improve, innovate, and reconfigure resources to match evolving environmental needs. ‘Resource reconfigurabi...
متن کاملTowards a Theoretical Framework of E-Business Value Creation: the Dynamic Capabilities Perspective
With increasing attention on e-business and its implications for firm performance from both academia and practitioners, the study focuses on the mechanism under which e-business contributes to firm competitive advantage in the uncertain and dynamic environment. Drawing upon resource-based theory and dynamic capabilities approach, this study develops a theoretical framework that links e-business...
متن کاملDifferentiated Customers and Firms
The dissertation considers the heterogenity of firms. It consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part it is examined to what extent asymmetries between customers have an impact on firm behavior. In the empirical part, the author analyzes the level of heterogeneity of firm performance within industries. Chapter 1 introduces the reader into the topic of firm heterogene...
متن کاملA Strategic Alignment Model for IT Flexibility and Dynamic Capabilities: toward an Assessment Tool
The Dynamic Capabilities View (DCV) has emerged as an influential theoretical and management framework in modern IS research. However, despite the view's significant contributions, its strength and core focus are essentially in its use for historical firm performance explanation. Furthermore, valuable contributions have been made by several researchers in order to extend the DCV to fit the cons...
